Goodluck! Had a MONSTER wake up behind a topwater in the narrows a couple years ago when me and Brian went up. Awesome lake with only a few houses on the eastern part.
Just got back.. fishing for muskies was pretty brutal all wk. Could only get one over 40+ to follow and all the rest just hit but they were smaller ones. We caught a ton of huge walleye over 25 inches, and caught a 36 inch muskie trollin for walleyes, but that was it. Pretty rough wk of fishing all around with high winds that knocked the power out at camp, then it got really cold and rained which still didnt help.
I can honestly say, back in 1990 I had a fish that looked to be 48" chase, and she eventually ate in a figure 8. I had said it was 50-52" BEFORE she hit, but found it was 48". An hour later, on a cold, rainy early fall day, on the same spot, I had what I figure to be a 55-57" fish chase who was very girthy. (at the time I'd told my buddies in the boat with me that it was a 60" class fish...they told me to quit smokin' crack)
Anyway, there is the occasionaly baby Hughey there I believe!!!
yea ive seen some that looked like that, the lake is just different it seems than most musky lakes ive fished.. All the locals say not to use lures that are too large cause they wont hit, even though we have caught some on big suicks and gliders among other things in the past, but the biggest ones ive had on were on reaper tails sight fishing and small bucktails. Even the camp owners say the biggest fish caught every year are on bass lures or walleye stuff. I didnt fish hard for smallmouth really this year, but every other year i have i always hook my biggest one on something small like a 4 inch lizard. Just strange they would not hit anything in shallow water or deep. Tried bulldawgs, Weagle, DCG's, Suick's, diff cranks, I actually had a decent fish on a Chatterbait, but it just got off as i was fightin him. Everything else was on Mepps number 5
I will be making a trip to Canyon Lake in mid July. I was curious if anyone had some additional advise for a first time trip to this lake. I understand the water is very clear and the musky bite can be really tough at times due to this. Any information would be great.
it is really tough a lot of the time there, but there are times where you can have a lot of action as well. you get a lot of follows on the lake, depending on the weather, but a lot of fish won't hit sometimes. Use smaller baits, they seem to like them better in that lake for some reason, and read the advice a lot of people posted on this thread from before.
Unless you have extremely bad weather or other some other freak of nature happens, a guy could catch a musky on Canyon, Indian Chain, or Stewart with his eyes shut. Common 6 fish days. Fish up to 45" are numerous with some true queens present. Dawgs, Depth Raiders, tails of all size, side to sides, raw pork chops, big bobbers, apple cores, etc. etc. they all catch fish. Great lakes for first timers, guys that need a break from casting for pigs on Eagle, or people that just need to catch lots of muskies. Very fun lakes to fish!!! If its the big girls you're after, go to Eagle. Tell ya what, there are some hog walleyes in those lakes. Good Luck on the weather, thats the only real thing that can stop ya. TC
