Mercury optimax 1.5L block... can you make a 75hp a true 90hp?
Hey guys,
just wondering if anyone know the differences between a opti 75 and 90. They both share the same 1.5L block and lower end, but i dont know what components a different. I am hoping something as simple as an ecu.
I have contacted Merc directly but they are not allowed to discuss these changes, yet hinted there are only subtle differences between these two engines.
Anyone care to share if they have the info... PM's are fine with me too.

Pretty sure it's just the ECM. Knew a guy that worked at Merc that swore he could make my 135 opti into a 150, just by reprogramming the ECM. Never did take him up on it.

I cant say for sure, but I have heard from a little birdie, that the injectors, throttle body and ECM are the only thing different. That little birdie also told me that if any Mercury service center were to modify a motor in that way, they may loose their certifications and Mercury may require the shop to have said employee discharged.
Apparently they take this very seriously.
